    nsp:content "The gentleman who provided access in July 2016 claimed there had been Muslim burials discovered there three or four years prior. Some had jewelry (he mentioned a necklace and ring, specifically). Among the remains were a mother and a baby. A few of the images show the pavement where he said they are located. At this time, there was a pending plan to open the burials for viewing by covering them with glass. In October 2019, however, this account was challenged by Antonio Mursia, Ph.D., researcher at the University of Rome, \"La Sapienza,\" who said that the burials were exclusively Christian, with the earliest dating to the twelfth century. A cross discovered in one of the tombs likely comes from either the tenth or eleventh century. It may have functioned as a reliquary." ;

    nsp:notes "In Latin Monasticism in Norman Sicily, White argues that this priory was founded by Abbot Ansger of Catania, who died in 1124 (110 and 210-211 n. 6, where the author discusses issues with the priory's chronology that have been created by forgeries). More recently, in 2024, Antonio Mursia, Ph.D., a researcher at the University of Rome \"La Sapienza,\" has suggested that Roger I was its founder, which would mean that the monastery was established before 1101, the year of the count's death. He also added this background: \"The church of Saint Mary in the Valley of Giosafat (Iosaphat) of Paternò presents a complex history. It is characterized by issues related to the authenticity of documentary sources and power dynamics between religious institutions and secular authorities. The sacred building, built or refounded in the last two decades of the 11th century, during the rule of Roger I, was donated to the bishop of Catania, Ansger, before 1101. After Roger's death, the church passed to the monks of Saint Mary in the Valley of Giosafat, presumably to celebrate the marriage between Adelicia del Vasto and Godfrey of Boulogne in 1113. The church was consecrated in 1126 by Bishop Maurizio of Catania and Bishop Hugo of Syracuse, with the support of Marquis Aleramico, who donated important property to the priory. The historical record of these events is partly compromised by forged parchments, especially during the 13th century. The forgeries, devised by the monks to protect their rights, were intended to make up for the loss of original deeds or to justify acquisitions of property, both licit and illicit. The monastery of Saint Mary in the Valley of Giosafat became one of the most important dependencies of the abbey in Jerusalem of the same name through donations and acquisitions. A bull issued by Innocent II in 1140 confirms the extent of the priory's assets, including mills, land, vineyards and other properties. Despite the significance of the Etna monastic community, the main control remained at the priory of Saint Mary Magdalene in Messina because of its economic and commercial importance. The structures of the church of Saint Mary in the Valley of Giosafat are all visible today, although they have numerous remakes.\""^^xsd:string ;
