This small coenoby was located along an important road axis of the imperial era, the Catina-Therme itinerary, which connected the Ionian coast with the Sicilian hinterland. Following the donation, San Filippo in Pantano was transformed into a Benedictine grange, destined for the economic and administrative management of the land patrimony of the priory of Licodia. The metochion was not only a resting place for travellers, but also served as a strategic junction for the control of the surrounding territory.
