This record reflects its status as a monastery, a transtion which likely took place in the late 12th century.] The church of Saint Nicholas, located within the castle of Paternò, was donated by Henry del Vasto in the 1120s to the Abbey of the Holy Trinity of Cava de' Tirreni. This church, mentioned as \"beati Nicolai,\" is also mentioned in the Papal Collectory of 1308-1310 as \"San Nicolò de Lombardis,\" suggesting a connection with immigrants from Liguria and Piedmont who followed the del Vasto family to Sicily. The donation also included a grange associated with the church, located near the Dittaino River, as well as estates along the Simeto River, where the church of Saint John, already in ruins, was located. The church of Saint Nicholas, thanks to fertile land and donations received, grew to become a significant priory in the late 12th century, managing a modest rural demesne.
