    nsp:notes "The monastery of Saint Leo in Monte Gibello was founded or restored in the first half of the 12th century by Henry (Enrico) del Vasto. The monastery soon became an important monastic centre on the southern slope of Mount Etna. Henry, driven mainly by spiritual motives, donated the church and many lands in 1137 to the monk John (Giovanni) of the abbey of Sant'Agata in Catania. These possessions, located between Mount Arso and present-day Ragalna, were part of a strategic context, close to important communication routes and centres of hospitality for travellers. Thanks to the protection of Henry and, later, Simon (Simone) del Vasto, the monks of Saint Leo promoted the cult of the bishop saint from Catania and accumulated a substantial patrimony, through concessions and testamentary legacies. This monastery became one of the main centres of religiosity in the Etnean area, with an influence that extended from the 12th to the 14th century. In 1205, Saint Leo and its granges were subjected to the Abbey of Saint Mary of Licodia, but continued to receive donations and privileges from members of the local nobility, further consolidating their position in the region. - Antonio Mursia, Ph.D., researcher at the University of Rome \"La Sapienza,\" 2024"^^xsd:string ;
