    nsp:notes "The monastery of Saint Nicolò l'Arena, mentioned in historical documents from the 12th century, is of particular importance in the monastic context of the Etnean area. Located in the vicinity of the present-day municipality of Nicolosi, it was close to the high road that connected the Ionian coast with the Nebrodi hinterland. It was the object of a significant concession by Simon (Simone) del Vasto in 1156, as part of a series of privileges granted to the monks of Saint Leo in Monte Gibello. According to White (Latin Monasticism in Norman Sicily, 118), the monastery and its possessions, including the estate in the Olivastro district, constituted the primitive nucleus of a vast monastic estate that developed between the 12th and 14th centuries. This monastery, with its strategic position, played a key role in the expansion of the heritage of the Benedictine monks of Etna, becoming a point of reference for the monastic network in the region. The concession of San Nicolò, which represented an event of exceptional importance in the history of the local Benedictine communities, highlights the importance attributed to the management of the territory and the promotion of religious worship in an area that saw an intense activity of acquisition of goods and rights by the monastic orders. - Antonio Mursia, Ph.D., researcher at the University of Rome \"La Sapienza,\" 2024"^^xsd:string ;
